Both the original Live Custom and the hybrid are phenomenal drums.
Unfortunately, Yamaha does not do a very good job telling you what is so great about them.
When Yamaha does R&D on something, it takes years.
Then, they test market it to make sure it performs as it should.
This pedigree of quality is not seen with the competition.
As good as some of the other high-end brands are, Yamaha produces some of the best-sounding drums.
Period.
The intensity of this finish really needs to be experienced in person as well.
It's absolutely stunning.

For Jazz gigs and small venues, I've used the 18" bass drum, 10" mounted tom, 14" floor tom, and matching snare.
In this configuration, the beautiful kit just sings.
And considering how rare the 18" bass drum is, along with an appropriate sized mounted and floor tom, this is THE Bop Kit of Bop Kits! In the studio, I've used both the 18" and 22" bass drum, and these two sizes offer lots of versatility.
Now live, especially for larger shows, it's the 22" bass drum with all the toms has been the only way to go.
But when I'm feeling a little extravagant, I've used both the 18" as a remote, and the 22" as the principal bass drum, ala Russ Miller style.
And OMG! If that just isn't a wicked cool setup both in playability, and the visual too! Evans heads on all toms, 18" bass drum, and snare.
