Department Purpose
As a Director within Venture Catalyst, this is a leadership position focused on enabling the economic impact of university research through effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders to maximize their impact on economic development through University technology transfer and technology commercialization activities based on University research, know-how, and intellectual property.
The Director is a member of the CIEDO management team and has leadership, management, supervisory, administrative, and operational responsibilities for the unit.
Job Summary Under general direction of the CIEDO, the Director, Venture Catalyst – Economic Engagement is responsible for serving as liaison between the campus & technology focused business and public sector stakeholders with the goal of enhancing University innovation-based economic impact in alignment with the objectives and strategic direction of the University Strategy and the Office of the CIEDO The Director serves as a point person with the expertise to facilitate economic engagement stemming from University research, technology transfer, and new venture development.
The Director will work in close partnership with and leverage the expertise, relationships, and roles of key campus partners within Venture Catalyst, the Office of Research, Government and Community Relations, Development and Alumni Relations, Global Affairs, Strategic Communications, the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost, the Graduate School of Management, and the Mike and Renee Child Institute for Innovation Entrepreneurship.
Acting as the technology commercialization liaison (TCL), The Director will personify and help communicate the creativity, entrepreneurialism, dynamism and success associated with UC Davis innovation and new venture development to external stakeholders engaged with innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development; facilitate community building and network development within the Sacramento-area and the broader Northern California mega-region; and support efforts and implement strategies for greater regional and national visibility for UC Davis start-ups, investors, and local and regional economic development organizations.
Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting Venture Catalyst in its efforts to create a supportive environment for innovation, entrepreneurship and startups and to help create a welcoming and receptive environment within which technology companies can settle and grow.

QUALIFICATIONS Required: Minimum Education/Experience Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Planning, Public Policy, Public Administration, Economic Development, Science, Engineering; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in economic development, business and commercial area revitalization; small business development; commercial real estate development or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in university based innovation and enterprise activities including business start-ups and spin-outs, venture capital, Angel investors, company formation and student enterprise Experience in project management including designing and defining a scope of work and deliverables schedule for the appropriate time frame and needs of the client.
Experience working in revitalization targeted communities, real estate and land use, and/or brokering public-private partnerships for revitalization projects.
Experience developing and executing strategic and tactical plans to design original and creative programs and assess the success of the programs to develop solutions and devise program improvements.
Preferred: Additional Preferred License/Certification Certification by the IEDC or equivalent international body.
Preferred Education/Experience Master’s / MBA or PhD in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Planning, Public Policy, Science , Engineering or Public Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) Knowledge of University of California policies and rules governing intellectual property, equity, licensing, technology transfer and related conflicts of interest and commitment policies and ethical requirements.
