Job Description and Duties
Come join our team within the Habitat Conservation Planning Branch located in West Sacramento.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Native Plant Program is hiring one Limited Term Environmental Scientist to support conservation and recovery of native plant species.
This position is part of an innovative team charged with planning and implementing the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act.
The incumbent will have the opportunity to support the team in the creation of new plans, processes, and materials for this program as well as by performing site assessments and monitoring for Western Joshua Tree in southern California.
Duties include: • Assist with the preparation of the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Plan, • Review and issue Western Joshua Tree hazard management permits, • Conduct site assessments to assess biological suitability of potential land acquisition sites and help establish long-term monitoring plots for local population assessments, • Collaborate and foster relationships with tribal partners, and • Monitor the western Joshua tree email inbox and respond to internal and external questions.

This position is 12 months Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment.

Working Conditions The position requires the use of a computer for several hours each day, the completion of office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; attendance at meetings and participation in videoconferencing calls.
The position may require travel throughout the state including overnight travel, early mornings, late nights, hiking over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain, use of alternative methods of transportation (including all-terrain vehicle), and work in inclement weather.
A valid California’s driver’s license is required to drive to meetings and field sites.
This position allows for an in-office/telework hybrid work schedule and in-office attendance may change based on operational need.
The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff.
